The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored many of the problems with the quality of nursing home care, as well as the reality that America’s nursing homes are not designed to deal with infectious disease epidemics. A new National Academy of Medicine Perspective outlines an approach that could match some residents to other care sites like memory centers or “extended care wings” in hospitals, strengthen community-based services, increase nursing home staff pay and training, and restructure financing.
The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Milbank Memorial Fund hosted a Q&A on September 30 with two of the coauthors, Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of The John A. Hartford Foundation and a member of the independent Coronavirus Commission on Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes, and Christopher F. Koller, president of The Milbank Memorial Fund. The co-sponsored event was moderated by Noam Levey of the Los Angeles Times.
